  • What Anteverted Uterus Means for Your Pregnancy

The uterus or womb is one of the most important organs associated with the reproductive health of a woman. It regulates a woman’s menstrual cycle and nourishes the baby during pregnancy. Any abnormality in its proper development can severely affect a woman’s ability to give birth. The uterus is fixed to the walls of the pelvis by ligaments that enable it to move backward and forwards. In some women, the uterus may be tilted forwards towards the front of their abdomen. These women have what is called as the anteverted womb or uterus. Anteverted Uterus – What Is It? When the uterus leans towards the front part of the abdomen, it is called an anteverted uterus. Likewise , when the uterus is tilted backwards towards the part of the rectum, it is called a retroverted uterus. Thus, the difference between anteverted vs retroverted uterus lies mainly in the angle of their inclination. Anteverted womb is present in around 75-80 percent of women. On the other hand, a retroverted uterus is present in around a quarter of all women. Usually when a woman is told about the shape of her uterus is anteverted or retroverted, she gets very scared and begins to associate it with pregnancy issues and problems in menstruation. But is there really a need for such a fear? Is Anteverted Uterus good or bad? Caption: A pregnant woman, Credits: Pixabay As mentioned before, the presence of an Anteverted womb is exceedingly common. That does not, however, means that it is hazardous. Contrary to what you might think, most women remain unaware of the fact that they possess an anteverted uterus. It is in no way linked to infertility or a compromised reproductive health. There doesn’t exist any anteverted uterus pregnancy issues. Peculiarly, the anteverted uterus pregnancy  bump makes its appearance quicker than a woman with a normal shaped uterus. Also, this kind of uterus does not lead to any problem or pain during sexual intercourse. However, a severely tilted uterus may give rise to back ache, and pain during urination. In such a situation a visit to a gynecologist becomes mandatory. Causes And Symptoms There are no exact causes of an anteverted uterus. One is genetically endowed with such a uterus. However, a previous surgery or a condition known as endometriosis can alter the angle of the uterus in some women. A severely tilted uterus can present itself in the form of the following symptoms Abdominal cramps during periods A constipated stomach during or after menstruation Back pain Pain during sexual intercourse How is this condition diagnosed? Caption: Woman undergoing an ultrasound, Credits: Pixabay Without an ultrasound or a pelvic examination, it is highly unlikely for you to realize that your uterus is anteverted. Other kinds examinations include: Speculum examination, to examine vagina and cervix Vulval examination, to check for any vaginal infections Bimanual palpation, to examine the ovaries inside the vagina Is There a Treatment for Anteverted Uterus? Caption: An expecting couple, Credits: Pixabay There is no treatment for this condition because it is not categorized as a reproductive health disorder. If the uterus is severely tilted backward or forward then it is recommended to visit a gynecologist. Otherwise simple pelvic floor exercises on the mat can ease any discomfort that you may feel due to it. Thus, we see that women having an anteverted uterus have nothing to fear. Be it pregnancy, sex life, or menstrual cycle, having an anteverted uterus wont impact any of these areas. Contrary, women with an anteverted uterus live a healthy life without any trouble whatsoever.

  • Lupus Pernio – A skin disfiguring condition that targets women

Sarcoidosis is a common health disorder of unknown origins that mainly affects the lungs and other organs like skin, eyes, neck, and heart. It is characterized by the growth of small groups of inflammatory cells in the affected part of your body. The disease manifests itself in various forms, one of them being lupus pernio. On average, around 25 percent of people who suffer from sarcoidosis develop lupus pernio on the skin of various organs. The condition is observed more often in females than in males. Lupus Pernio – What Is It? Lupus pernio affects orally. It refers to the hardened, bluish-red or violet eruptions that commonly occur on the surface of cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. It was initially thought to be related to lupus vulgaris, another disorder characterised by skin lesions which is a type of skin tuberculosis. It is most commonly observed among people in the age group of 45-65 years. Though its exact cause remains unknown, it has been shown to be associated with the affected person’s genetics. Lupus Pernio Pathology Outlines A microscope, Credits: Pixabay The most prominent histopathology feature of lupus pernio is the presence of epithelioid cells with various large cells called Langerhans that is commonly found in many diseases. It is generally found in people of Africa and does not abate with usual therapies. Its effect varies from person to person and lasts up to many years. Features of lupus pernio Apart from affecting the skin, there are no other symptoms of this disorder. It exhibits the following features: Stubborn reddish-purple plaques appearing on nose, cheeks, lips, and ears. Its facial lesion is particular to sarcoidosis. The lesions may turn into ulcers or sores on the skin. They can leave scars The lesions may spread up to the area between the two nostrils. The lesions begin to appear slowly but progress rapidly. They may permeate to the cartilage of the area affected causing skin disfigurement. Differential diagnosis of lupus pernio Lupus pernio can be confused with other forms of malignant and benign tumours like lymphoma. Its differential diagnosis also includes skin infections like leprosy and skin tuberculosis, particularly, lupus vulgaris. Diagnosis of Lupus Pernio Caption: Doctor with patient, Credits: Pixabay It is diagnosed on the basis of the clinical features described above. It is associated with sarcoidosis which affects the respiratory tract. A physical examination of the patient is done after which the lesion is examined. A skin biopsy is needed to fully confirm the diagnosis of lupus pernio. Other important tests for the diagnosis include: Chest x-ray Pulmonary (lungs) function tests Other radiological tests Treatment of Lupus Pernio Caption: Cosmetic camouflage, Credits: Pixabay Lupus pernio needs to be treated immediately as it progresses very fast and can cause considerable skin disfigurement. It can lead to negative mental, social, and psychological consequences. The treatment is done according to the severity of the disease. The typical line of treatment followed include: Topical treatments like corticosteroid therapy Intralesional steroid injections if the affected skin area is small. Laser treatment Antimalarial drugs like hydroxychloroquine Skin reconstructive surgery is conducted for lesions that severely disfigure the skin. Additionally, patients can take the help of cosmetic camouflage (creams, liquids, concealers) to hide the lesions on the skin surface. There is no known origin as well as treatment of lupus pernio. Since it spreads very fast, it’s advised that patients consult the doctor soon. As it’s a form of sarcoidosis, the respiratory health of the patients is also at risk. They should regularly go for lung and cardiovascular health checkups.

  • Why Endometriosis Is a Threat to Women’s Fertility

Several conditions can affect a woman’s reproductive health. Most of them are related to the uterus, i.e., a reproductive organ that protects the fetus. Some of these conditions include endometriosis, and bulky uterus. All these conditions can severely affect a woman’s fertility or diminish her ability to get pregnant. What Is Endometriosis? Endometrial tissue grows inside the uterus and protects the womb lining for ovulation (the process of the egg release in women during menstruation). This tissue contains glands, blood cells, and other connective tissue. When endometrial tissue develops in places outside the uterus, it gives rise to endometriosis. Endometriosis radiology indicates that it grows most commonly in places like your lower abdomen (pelvic area) and the ovaries. If the tissue grows inside the uterus, as in, in normal circumstances, then it is expelled during menstruation. But when it grows outside, as in endometriosis, it cannot be removed during menstruation. It causes pain in the lower abdomen. If remained undiagnosed, the tissue can spread further and affect the daily functioning of the patient. Endometriosis is divided into various stages. These are based on the presence and extent of the severity of this tissue and the presence and extent of this tissue’s development in the ovaries. Endometriosis stages are: Stage – I (minimal) Stage – II (mild) Stage – III (moderate) Stage – IV (severe) What Are Endometriosis Causes? Caption: Sanitary pads for menstruation, Credit: Pixabay The exact cause of Endometriosis remains unknown. The following causes are put forward: Menstrual flow problems Scar endometriosis Growth of embryonic cell Genetic factor Menstrual flow problems: Instead of following the usual path of exiting the body, menstrual flow enters the fallopian tubes and pelvis instead. Scar endometriosis: A process like C- section can move the endometrial cells causing scarring of the tissue. Growth of embryonic cell: Sometimes, embryonic cells and the pelvis may develop into endometrial tissue within those areas. Genetic factor: A woman with endometriosis in some family members is also at risk of developing the condition herself. Symptoms Woman experiencing pain, Credit: Pixabay Some of the symptoms commonly associated with endometriosis are: Intense menstrual cramps A longer than usual period cycle Prolonged lower pain and pelvic pain Diarrhea, constipation, and bloating Vomiting Blood in urine or stool Spotting between periods Treatment Caption: woman with pills, Credit: Pixabay There are several treatments for endometriosis. However, if the problem persists, endometriosis surgery is seen as the last resort. Some of the possible treatment options for women with endometriosis are as follows: Medications for pain Treatments with hormones Endometriosis surgery Medications for pain: Medications for managing pain include both over the counter drugs like ibuprofen or prescribed medications by the doctor. Treatments with hormones: Hormonal therapies like birth control, Medroxyprogesterone can also be used as a possible treatment option. An intrauterine device (IUD) is also generally advised. Endometriosis surgery: The surgery is done to remove endometriosis areas. It is called conservative surgery. It is done for mild-moderate forms of endometriosis. For more severe cases, uterus removal, through a hysterectomy surgery becomes necessary. Women between the ages 25-40 years commonly experience endometriosis. Although its cause remains mostly unknown, women struggling with painful symptoms are still able to conceive. There are various treatment lines for this condition, but the best preventive action on your part would be to consult a medical practitioner if you feel too much pain during the menstrual cycle. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with ample movement daily is greatly effective in reducing the symptoms’ severity.

There are many ways in which the surgery can be done. They might make an 8- to 10-inch cut in the front of the knee and take out the damaged part of the joint and the surfaces of the thigh bone and shin next to the joint. Once that is done, artificial knee is implanted. You might get what’s called “minimally invasive” surgery. • Autism vs Aspergers Syndrome

What is Autism and Aspergers Syndrome? a kid with odd behavior, Credits: pexels Autism- According to the National Institute of Mental Health, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is “a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior.” It is generally found in children by the age of two. Asperger’s- It is considered when people have milder symptoms than autism and are capable of living independent lives with little to no assistance. They have difficulty in social interaction and nonverbal communication and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. High-Functioning Autism -children with autism who have an IQ of 70 or higher and exhibit milder symptoms. For example, these children have fewer language delays, few to no cognitive deficits, and better spatial skills. The most noticeable difference for people with High-Functioning Autism is that they do not have intellectual disabilities. Similarities of Autism and Asperger’s autism, Credits: pixabay The following are a few similarities between the two: Tough to interpret verbal and non-verbal language Unable to comprehend gestures, facial expressions, jokes, etc. Lack of emotions towards others Unable to express emotions Can come across as insensitive, blunt, rude, strange Unable to make friends Restricted and repetitive behaviors Limited interests Deep knowledge in area of interest Highly sensitive to certain sounds, textures, smells, tastes, etc. Differences Between Asperger and Autism a shy child,, Credits: pixabay 1. Language Delay a girl trying to talk, Credits: pexels One notable distinction is that children with autism tend to start talking later. Those with Asperger do not frequently have a delay in their language. It is difficult for children with Asperger to communicate and might be socially awkward. 2: A Higher IQ than Normal a child reading, Credits: pexels While kids with autism typically have a below average IQ, those with Asperger’s may have higher-than-normal intelligence. It is said that neither Aspergers or High functioning autism can occur in children with IQs below 65-70, however, it is not true for all children diagnosed with Aspergers. Some children with AS can still struggle with other cognitive impairments not directly related to autism, such as dyslexia. High functioning autism is often seen in children with average to above average IQ level. Cognitive impairments are not associated with HFA. 3: Time of Diagnosis The average age of diagnosis for a child with autism is around age 4. As children with Asperger’s typically don’t exhibit language delays or have lower IQs, they’re often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed until their teen or adult years. Asperger’s is often misdiagnosed as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although these conditions are sometimes both present, Asperger’s is different from ADHD in that it’s a problem with socializing, rather than a problem with focusing attention. 4: Their Brains Work Differently different brain functioning in autism and aspergers, Credits: pixabay A few studies suggest that children with Asperger’s syndrome have different brain patterns than those with autism. While this research offers intriguing facts, more studies need to be done toexplore the brains of children to reveal more information. 5: Milder Symptoms in Asperger’s Children with Asperger’s are often able to live independently and can attend school. Whereas, many kids with autism will need specialized education and support.
