- 10 Tips for New Parents with a Sick Baby
Nobody can deny the fact that infants or newborns are the most adorable little humans ever. When these babies fall ill- be it a cold, flu, baby cough, diaper rashes, etc, it usually causes havoc in the household and especially stresses out new parents. In fact, quite a few mothers start to stress out even when they observe their newborn sneezing. The main cause of sickness or infection is because these newborns are coming in contact with pathogens for the first time and it may take a while for their immunity to adapt and strengthen. Thus, their recovery period will be comparatively longer. Important Tips for New Parents with a Sick Baby ⦁ Identifying the Problem In order to treat and care for your sick baby, one should first be able to identify the cause, reason, or type of sickness. Here are some signs and symptoms of the most common illnesses in newborns: Teething Fussiness Drooling Running a low-grade temperature Chewing of objects Actual Illness Fussiness Drooling Chewing of objects Running a higher fever Coughing Congestion Here are the symptoms more specific to a type of illness: Image credits: Pixabay Common Cold A stuffed or runny nose Thick and yellowish-green nasal discharge. Fussiness Fever Coughing, mainly at night Sneezing Low appetite Difficulty in feeding and breastfeeding Trouble sleeping Flu Common cold symptoms Chills Vomiting Diarrhea Pneumonia Common cold symptoms Shakes Chills Unstable breathing Excessive coughing Sweating Flushed skin High fever Image credits: Pixabay ⦁ Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! In general, proper hydration is required for the normal functioning of the body. However, when your infant is sick, especially when they are vomiting, a lot of fluid intakes must be received in order to prevent dehydration. Be sure to breastfeed or bottle-feed your child adequately or even use oral rehydration solutions to restore all the lost water and electrolyte. Sugar water is a good form of oral rehydration for dehydrated and sick babies and it also has a calming effect on babies as a bonus. Also Read: Breastfeeding: What is Responsive Feeding? ⦁ Humidifier or Warm Showers When your baby has a cold, their nasal tract tends to get blocked and hence a ‘blocked nose’. This makes it very uncomfortable for the baby who is just learning how to adapt. In order to soothe out this problem, steam is used to loosen the bose secretion and unblocked the nose, enabling your child to breathe more comfortably. This is usually done in two ways: ⦁ Shower Steam Turn on your shower and increase the temperature of the water as high as you can tolerate. Let the bathrooms become steamy and have your baby in the room. ⦁ Humidifier The humidifier serves the same purpose as a steam shower but has more advantages as it can be placed in any room of your house that your baby is in. Image credits Pickpik ⦁ Diaper Cream Sometimes, when your baby is unwell the pediatrician may prescribe some medications to boost your baby’s recovery. However, these medications could make the baby poop more acidic and as a result, cause diaper rash and makes the skin raw, sensitive, and irritated. Thus, diaper creams are effective antibiotic ointments that help soothe these rashes, making your sick child significantly more comfortable. ⦁ Plenty of Rest Your body needs plenty of rest and sleep in order to recover from any sickness and let your body heal and grow. Sleep is essential for recovery because it helps boost your immune system and babies are no exception to this. Thus, it is very important to ensure that your sick newborn receives a good amount of rest, especially when they have difficulty falling asleep due to discomfort caused by an illness. There is also melatonin for babies that are safe but must only be administered after the pediatrician has approved its usage. Image credits Wikimedia commons ⦁ Spoil Them with Love and Affection As mentioned above, when a baby falls sick they face a lot of problems when it comes to sleeping comfortably or soundly. As a result, the sickness tends to interrupt the sleep cycle and the baby will not have the energy required to beat the sickness. They also tend to lose appetite. Therefore, it is very very important to spoil your baby with love by providing physical and emotional comfort through your touch and words. This will help curb some of their crankiness and discomfort and help them sleep or even feed better. ⦁ Take Care of your Own Health Although this may not be the first that comes to mind, it should be stressed upon more. This is because in order to have the required amount of mental and physical capacity to effectively care for your sick babies, maintaining your own health is very important. This is because if a parent is sleep-deprived, tried, or frustrated they will not be able to care for their babies or provide them comfort. Thus, the baby will be lacking both emotional and physical love that is required for efficient recovery. Therefore, it is crucial to sleep when your baby is sleeping or if required, reach out to a family member or babysitter and enable you to rest for some time. Image credits Pikist What not to do There are a couple of things parents should avoid unless advised otherwise by their pediatrician. Antibiotics should not be administered for cold as it does not help fight the virus. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs or fever reducers like Infants’ Tylenol are not recommended for infants below the age of 3 months. Overall, any type of infant cold medication or any OTC medicine is given must first be approved by the pediatrician, especially to a baby under 1 year. Such medications may also not be recommended or given to a child who is randomly throwing up. Aspirin should never be given to a baby or child. Typically adult cough medications aren’t recommended for children under 2 years. Vapor rubs if not utilized properly, can be irritating to the respiratory airways and cause other problems and symptoms. Don’t let your baby sleep lay on their stomach and fall asleep. Conclusion To all the new parents out there, you’re doing great! Caring for a newborn, especially when sick, is not easy but being a parent is very rewarding. Therefore, do not overstress as it affects both you and your baby in the long run. These tips must be noted and followed alongside the instructions from your pediatrician and it will ensure a speedy and more comfortable recovery for the babies.

- Acute Tubular Necrosis
The kidneys are an important organ of the body that performs various essential functions like maintaining overall fluid balance in the body, regulating and filtering minerals from the blood, and filtering waste materials from food, medications, and toxic substances. When your kidneys fail to function, it could be due to a couple of complications and necrosis is one of them. Necrosis is the death of a cell in an organ or tissue due to the following reasons: Infectious pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites Oxygen deprivation or hypoxia Environmental triggers like extreme heat, radiation, or UB rays exposure or even trauma. There are also several types of necrosis that target or affect the kidneys. They include: Fibrinoid necrosis Coagulative necrosis Acute tubular necrosis What is Acute Tubular Necrosis? Your kidneys are made of nephrons that have structural and functional properties in the kidneys. Each nephron can be divided into the following parts: The Bowman’s capsule Proximal convoluted tubule Loop of Henle Distal convoluted tubule Nephron structure, Image credits: Wikimedia commons The convoluted tubules perform the following functions: Proximal convoluted tubule Reabsorbs ions, water nutrients, removes toxins, and adjust the PH. Distal convoluted tubule Selectively secretes and absorbs different ions to maintain blood ph and electrolyte balance. Acute tubular necrosis is a type of kidney injury that causes damage to the kidney tubule cells and as a result, it will compromise the essential functions mentioned above. They are commonly caused by the following: Low blood flow to the kidneys Low blood pressure Excessive and harmful drugs that damage the kidneys like X-ray contrast dye, anesthesia drugs, and antibiotics Severe bodywide infections. Diabetes Stroke Heart attack Excessive blood loss during surgery or trauma Symptoms of Acute Tubular Necrosis Symptoms include: Dehydration Excessive thirst. Low urine output. Fluid retention Swelling Nausea Vomiting Drowsiness Sluggish Confusion or disorientation Bloating as a symptom, Image credits: pixabay What are the changes that take place in the Tubule Cells? The following changes in the cell take place due to Necrosis: Cellular swelling Increase in cell volume Loss of plasma membrane integrity Leakage of cellular contents Cell lysis occurs Random degradation of DNA Conclusion Acute tubular necrosis damages the structures of the tubules and commonly causes kidney failure. When this happens, the electrolytes and fluid in the body increases to unsafe levels and can be extremely fatal to the human body.
- Coagulative Necrosis
Every living thing is made of cells. Sometimes, these body cells die and may or may not be replaced by regenerated cells. There are two different types of processes of cell death: Necrosis and Apoptosis. Necrosis: What is it? Necrosis is the Irreversible injury or death of the cell due to encounters with noxious stimuli that may include: Infectious pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites Oxygen deprivation or hypoxia Environmental triggers like extreme heat, radiation, or UB rays exposure. Some common types of necrosis include: Fibrinoid necrosis Coagulative Necrosis Fat necrosis Acute Tubular Necrosis How is it different from Apoptosis? Apoptosis is a cell death that could either be through a physiological or pathological whereas necrosis is mostly always associated with a pathological process. This means that apoptosis is a more internally programmed cell death whereas necrosis is an uncontrollable cell death which is caused by external factors like trauma or infections. What is Coagulative Necrosis? As we also know that our blood is the most important part of your circulatory system. It has a couple of important functions. They include: Forming blood clots RBCs that transfer essential oxygen throughout the body. Carry out or transfer essential nutrients throughout the body. WBCs are an important part of the immune system and help fight pathogens. Now when blood does not flow or the flow of blood is reduced to certain parts of the body, there could be multiple complications taking place. One of them is coagulative necrosis. Think of it as your one body as a whole individual- not receiving any food, water, or oxygen. Coagulative necrosis is a condition of cell death which is caused by a lack of blood flow in that particular area. As a result, the cells will not receive the necessary oxygen and nutrients that are required for its functional and survival purposes and thus causing cell death. It occurs through the body except for the brain but most commonly occurs in the heart, kidneys, and spleen. What Causes Reduced Blood Flow? There are various factors that can cause reduced blood flow to specific areas of the body. Some of them include: Excessive cholesterol build-up that blocks the blood flow. Plaque: Excessive build-up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances inside the arteries. Other blockages are caused due to unhealthy lifestyle triggers like smoking, eating unhealthy, and lack of exercise Severe trauma, toxins, or an acute/ chronic immune response. What Happens to the Cells? Coagulative Necrosis is commonly followed by acute inflammation in which the architecture or shape of the underlying cell tissue is preserved for at least several days. Thus in spite of the cell death and nucleus disappearing, the cell tissue and organ shapes will remain firm and structured due to the coagulation protein due to enzymatic degradation. Eventually, leukocytes white blood cells are recruited to the site of necrosis and digest or engulf these dead cells by the process of phagocytosis. Is Cell Regeneration Possible? Despite cell death, there will be some structural remnant of necrotic tissue that remains. They start to replicate and replace the dead necrotic cells. Such cells multiply constantly and undergo mitosis and help in replacing the affected tissue. Finally, the fibroblast cell migrates to the affected area. It will synthesize the extracellular matrix and collagen and produce the structural framework for wound healing. Thus, it deposits fibrous tissue causing fibrosis and scarring in that area where the cells cannot replicate. Conclusion Coagulative necrosis is a type of cell death that is caused due to lack of blood flow, nutrients, and oxygen delivered to the cell. However, for several days the cell tissue and organ shape or framework will still be preserved.

- The Fascinating History Of X-ray
X rays have become an integral part of medical diagnosis. Have you ever thought what x-ray crystallography were, how they were discovered? Have a look! What are X-rays? X-rays help doctors identify the cause of the disease, Credits: pixabay X–Radiations are electromagnetic radiations with a wavelength of about 0.01 to 10 nanometers. The frequency corresponding to X-rays is about 30 petahertz to 30 exahertz. The wavelength of x-rays is shorter than the ultraviolet and longer than the gamma radiation. X-rays could pass through materials with a particular density. How X-rays were Discovered? X-rays help identify fractures, Credits: pixabay Way back in the year 1895 the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen at the University of Wuzburg, Germany discovered a new and unknown type of rays, which he called X-rays. He was doing some experiments related to electric discharges in glass vacuum tubes. He was not sure what type of rays it was and hence named X-rays. The first X-ray was his wife’s hands. A new branch of science called radiology was born, which is now highly useful in the medical diagnosis. William David Coolidge also made notable discoveries and advancements with X radiations. The tube that is used in X-rays is called the Coolidge tube. The applications of X-rays in medicine were based on Coolidge’s model. The first X-ray facilities started in Germany, England, France, and the US in 1896. X rays are now used to detect bone fractures and cancer cells. By the 1930’s, X-rays were a routine part of diagnostics. There have been rapid developments in the use of X-rays these days in the form of CT, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray crystallography. How Do X-rays Work? A patient undergoing X-ray, Credits: pixabay Medical x-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body. If x-rays traveling through the body also pass through an x-ray detector on the other side of the patient, an image will be formed that represents the “shadows” formed by the objects inside the body. The x-ray detector is a photographic film, but the type of detector can vary. The resulting images from the X-rays are termed as radiographs. How X-rays Revolutionized Medicine? X-Rays Helped Reveal the Structure of DNA Structure of DNA through X-ray crystallography, Credits: pixabay There have been tremendous advancements in Genetics and genetic engineering. Thanks to Rosalind Franklin who used X-ray crystallography to decipher the double-helical structure of DNA in the early 1950s. X-Rays Helped Treat Tuberculosis A physician viewing a radiograph, Credits: pexels In the 20th century, tuberculosis was a deadly infectious disease, and X-rays were used for diagnosis and treatment of the disease. X-rays revolutionized tuberculosis treatments. Chest X-rays allowed physicians to detect shadows in the lungs which helped them frame effective treatment options. X-rays To Treat Cancer X-rays are used to kill tumor tissues and cancer radiotherapy is a routine practice these days. What are the Types of X-rays? Advanced X rays, Credits: pexels S.NoType of X-raysApplications1Computed TomographyDiagnosis of blood clots, blood vessel aneurysms, and coronary artery disease.2X-ray diffractionThis technique is used to view the atomic and molecular structures of materials. This technique is used in nephrology3X-ray crystallographyThis is used to characterize the structure of macromolecules.4Digital x-rayThe radiation is less compared to the traditional X-rays. Resolution is high and the overall process is fast.5Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder X-ray To identify abdominal pain, to evaluate structures of the urinary and gastrointestinal system6Teeth and bones X-rays Help the dentist to look at the roots, bones, teeth and supporting tissues of the mouth7Chest X-raysTo identify conditions like shortness of breath, persistent cough, chest pain, and lung cancer8Lungs X-raysThe asymmetry of lung density is identified.9Abdomen X-raysTo visualize small and large intestines, liver, and stomach. To identify the cause of nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting.10MammogramsTo identify breast cancer11OPG (Orthopantomagram)This is a high-quality dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw12Foot x-rayCommonly used to identify signs and symptoms such as pain, tenderness, swelling, or deformities. Broken bones and dislocated joints are also identified. Take-Home Message X-rays are powerful diagnostic tools that help identify the cause of the disease and locate and kill cancers.
